Story of why current meijin is doing karuta. He can connect w. others when doing Karuta, he said.

He has the same illness as that old lady in his house... gradually losing eyesight.

He fell in love w. a girl who introduced him to karuta club, but immediately broke his heart when she got someone else as boyfriend.

Since there's less cards now, it's among his eyesight and can attack. Teacher's knee is in its limit, but not giving up.

It seems like teacher's strategy works as meijin got tired, too. He finally realized how teacher is a scary challenger.

Current queen won.

It seems like Hosoya-san's character wants to go there and is taking train and faced tunnels (internet connection loss).

Winner for Meijin next ep.

Fantastic episode!

"Making something of myself through Karuta." An insight into the Meijin's life this episode and it was absolutely engrossing from start to finish. Quite the wonderful and supportive aunt he's got too!

Particularly loved the buildup to the development of his sadistic side which was just brilliant! Sometimes being too good at something is a curse, and here's another stellar example of that. And that bromance between Harada-sensei and Kitano-sensei, beautiful!

Looks like things really aren't going well for him in the ongoing match, however. Still impressive how he has managed to bring it to even terms but you'd have to think that Harada-sensei probably has the advantage here. So intense though, and the monologues just perfect! I just can't wait to see how this'll come to an end...

Meanwhile, the Queen's match is done and dusted. Completely different kind of a game on this front, a fine touch of elegance in contrast lol. Fudge, having to lose on that note must be devastating though. How unlucky, there's nothing more frustrating than coming short second place in the first place alone but in such a fashion is just uncalled for. Shinobu-chan with the little pat was really sweet to see, too. Mutual respect between the two competitors, is always nice to see!

Arata with his string of mishaps in the end was quite hilarious but far too relatable lol.

Ended up staying up till 6:30 am today xD. But no regrets! Absolutely stoked for more!

I wasn't sure how they were going to have Harada win over such an OP opponent, but the way they handled experience and passion giving him the win was incredible. It didn't feel forced, played out, or basic in any way. It was brilliant and methodological. I loved every second of this episode.

Also the internet cut out feels very much like the MAL shut down right now haha. Waiting for thpse brief moment when you can get back on T-T

This show is so good at getting me to sympathize with its characters. I feel like it was all clearly set up for the audience to be rooting for Harada-sensei, but Suo's backstory pulled on my heartstrings, too. Like his Grandma, his vision is slowly deteriorating, possibly to the point of blindness, and he plays Karuta largely because of a complete lack of self-worth.

It barely even touched on the Queen's match, which may have seen its challenger's last hope for Karuta glory extinguished.

It's "just" Karuta, but it feels like there's so much weight behind each of these matches. And that's without arguably the show's 3 main characters being in them. Bravo.

It's great to hear more of Suo's personal story and the reason why he took up karuta up to now. One of the most interesting characters in this franchise imo.

I wasn't even sure who to root for for the Queen's match but it did live up to the hype for the sheer amount of psychology in these recent episodes.

That Queen match was very intense. I really enjoyed how they gave voices to the characters on the cards. Shinobu letting Inokuma count the cards out at the end nearly made me cry under the pretense that usually the winner is the one that counts em. I damn near cried.

And man. That master match has really amped up. All the passion from Harada and Suo are showing. I knew they would leave off on a cliff hanger, though, which sucks, but looking forward to next episode.

Different people has different progression of these kind of diseases. For Suou-meijin's case, his deterioration is much faster. The reason why wants to leave Karuta while at the top is because he knows his time is running out very fast.

I know right, so very infuriating each and every darn time!

Same here, really touching. It's like one of those games where two champions are most fitting y'know. Yanagihara-sensei vs Shimada-sensei's matchup in SanGatsu no Lion S2 is still my favourite of this kind but this certainly tugged a few heartstrings too.

It was just for a split-second, lol. But yeah, that was sweet.

Another amazing episode, we finally got some backstory for Suo. That double fault from Inokuma for the loss was unexpected, especially after the build up for it but it serves as a nice nail in the coffin so she can retire from karuta. The mejin match is a roller-coaster, i changed my opinion on the outcome of the match so many times over the last few weeks.

Even in this high quality season of a high quality series, this one of the episodes that stood out due to brimming over with emotions.

It's finally out and I'm so how fond of how they build up Suo's character up to this point including the flashback. Totally got me.

Also overwhelmingly emotional conclusion to the Queen match. Love both girls so much and seeing how Inokuma lost was peak bittersweetnesss , Shinobu's words of kindness and appreciation were the finisher for my poor kokoro. There should be a limit to how much feels are allowed in one episode lol.

Not to mention the extreme intensity of these episodes, Jesus. Wanted to reserve my 10 for the next episode, but you gotta give credit where credit is due.

Such a cliffhanger!! They really ended it with a luck of the draw...
The way they did the backstory was so good that it made me sympathize about Suo in just an episode. It really felt like his blindness was his 'the end of the world' moment for him, and I'm sad that he lacks self-worth, that he cannot find something for himself. I hope he comes to realize there's something more beautiful about karuta and to appreciate himself as well. He's come so far and worked so hard...

Can we talk about this. He said that flashback was from 20 YEARS AGO. Let me give you some info, 'expecto patronum' doesn't show up untill the third book of harry potter, which was first published in 1999 and published in japanese in 2001.

Does anyone know when this is meant to take place, cause unless it's 2021 the third book didn't exist 20 years ago in japanese. and since the manga chapter was from 2014 I highly doubt it takes place in 2021 or later. I just knew 20 years ago was too long ago for that joke to make sense.

As for the episode itself it left me as a mess, Queen result was gonna make me cry regardless of who won since they both deserve it so much. I just feel horrible that either of them have to lose, and I can't belive I gotta wait another week for the master match, what a way to finish the episode. If Harada doesn't get this then I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.

I love how they built up Suo as a character with his flashbacks and the reason behind why he plays Karuta.

The match was intense and damn that ending, who will luck favor today?
The Queen match was just as good and Shinobu asking Inokuma to count the cards at the end was very nice.

Started off with a calm and interesting backstory and then it intensifies more by the minute, my eyes were literally glued to the screen.
Suo's background & character is like a beautiful and melancholic story mixed into one. While he is not passionate or likes what he does but is passionate about making something out of himself & is the reason he invests so much into karuta and his motivation is his sweet aunt.
The fact that he might slowly go blind someday is actually sad but he just strives forward without any hesitation with different ways and especially that sadistic hunger to feed on others passion as his fuel.
And as for vision, even if its not there for him , the air and the sound is what he needs and utilizes like a master.
Suo is like the best complex interesting character of the series. Just love him even more now.

If suo represents the cold and calm ice. Harada is the passionate ball of fire. When i think suo is up for the win with all that backstory, Harada just strides on that thought with his powerful and aggressive plays. But everytime that knee pulse arises man i can almost feel that pain, like what he must be going through, that anguish but yet trying to keep a brave face and the fact he made suo play through 4 rounds and got him tired is admirable.
I really want him to win now after all this, but suo i just cant shake off that feeling when gives that looks.

Also that adorable gesture from tsundere kitano sensei throwing a pillow for harada, Rivalry and Friendship at its Best. :)

Coming to the queen match, wish they showed a bit more of the match, but even the end part was satisfying and amazing. Shinobu fighting with the connection with her cards while Inokuma with the bright light of a mother. Both enjoying the match especially shinobu.
And i was rooting for both, but yea sadly one has to loose. feeling really bad for inokuma she looked so down. But then those warm bright words from Shinobu which was really surprising which made it so bliss full.

The actual words were "Everyone loves you and your child" (stated by the author) which where conveyed through poetry. Thats what saved inokuma at the end.
Love her so much for that moment. <3

Also i feel for Arata my poor boy, buffering at important moments is really beyond frustrating. xD

The card counting moment after Shinobu's win was beautiful imo, I really liked it.

I'm gonna be completely honest: Harada bothered me a lot this episode, I can't quite put my finger on to why, but it did. The constant bravado made me check the episode runtime that was left every time it started. I do like him, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

Ah, great episode with Suou's backstory. It was almost startling to hear his thoughts so clearly compared to his usual quiet speaking voice lol. Really interesting to see how he doesn't really like karuta at all and is just using it to "make something of himself" as requested by his aunt - and how he "feeds off others' passion". In this context Harada's the perfect opponent for him! Plus he's struggling since he hasn't played 4 matches before and it's down to luck of the draw ... oh man, it's so hard to watch this knowing who wins! On the other side Shinobu ends up winning against Inokuma - and the latter faulted in the final reading! Shinobu letting her count the cards was a really nice gesture though :3

So the coolest part of this episode is 100% personal bias for me, but I actually live in Omura, Nagasaki as one of the very small handful of about 20 foreigners teaching English here. (It's not a big city by any stretch of the imagination).

Was super cool to see my inaka town make it into anime!!! I'm kind of curious to know more about what inspired the author to choose Omura as his hometown.

Oh man... I suspected that Suo might suffer from a disease connected to his eyes, but I did not imagine it being so serious. :( His aunt has it as well, so it has a lot in common with their genes. Basically he loses his eyesight gradually and is getting closer to blindness. Poor Suo. :(

Shinobu won! Surprisingly, her enemy lost because of a huge miastake. Shinobu had a lot of luck. If not that mistake I dunno if she would be able to win.

That pillow throw to Harada was epic, haha.

This episode, and the entirety of Harada and Suo's match, feels so important to me as a young disabled person. It blew me away.

A lot of this match was just a young person and an old person both echoing the same mantra: eventually your body will start to fail on you, and you won't be able to do the things you used to do anymore. That's such a relatable fear as a disabled person, and I was in tears seeing it brought to life.

As someone who put a lot of stock into the skills I was investing in growing up, only to lose those abilities in my mid-20s... this is such a heart-wrenching, resonating narrative. Seeing two people put their all into their capabilities and then despair as they see their bodies as clocks ticking down, with little-to-no way to stop it... having karuta tied to their sense of identity, struggling through what that means to lose that and how to recontextualize themselves without it...oof ouch ow.

I'll never forget how it felt to watch it the first time back when my illness was just beginning to develop. I watch it now, a year later, and it's nearly painful. 10/10 best disability narrative in sports anime ever.

Suo is quite the complex character now that we know his past and how he sees himself as a hollow person who does Karuta to make something of himself. I really hope Harada with his skill, experience and passion will win so Suo can find a real goal in his life even though he'll go blind.

Tense episode!

Good game, Inokuma-san. You tried very hard, and anybody would realise that you're not just someone who ended up there on luck because you're no longer at your peak. You came within an inch of victory. It was a great match. And I think this is the first time that Shinobu seems to respect her opponent so much. I remember she didn't really pay attention to Yumin.

BUT THE HIGHLIGHT IS HARADA-SENSEI! HE'S ON HIS WAY TO WINNING! SUO-SAN IS IN TROUBLE!

The background story pulled my heartstrings a bit, but I'm still rooting for Harada-sensei ^^ but it's quite sad that the Master got into this because he seems to lack any amount of self-worth. He says that he'll retire once he wins his fifth Master title, but if he loses I wonder what he'll do.

LUCK OF THE DRAW! GO, HARADA-SENSEI, GO!
